So long Garda!
The Opti World Championships has come to a close.

Official Results below.

Chase was our top Bermudian ( 111th place) folllowed by the youngest member of our team, Campbell ( 113). Mikey finished up at 120th, Ceci at 123rd and Benn at 130th place.

Unfortunately the race committee was only able to finish race 9 from the previous day ( for fleets that were not able to sail) and complete race 10 for all fleets

The team sailed extremely well for the conditions and , although there were some disappointments , they all had a great time in Garda!

After all the packing up of boats etc we were able to get our for a quick dinner to celebrate Benn's birthday and then rushed off to the prize giving which was followed by trading on a grand scale. The team all came out with a bagful of trades!

Home today for some of us .....Ceci & Mikey will stay on in Garda and join up with the Open Bic team to sail in the open world championships .Campbell flys on to Scotland to meet up with the Bermuda team for the Uk Nationals. Benn and Chase start their Byte training and prepare to jet off to Newport in August for the Byte Worlds....hoping to qualify Bermuda for a spot at the Youth Olympics next year in China.

Julie and Tim will sign off on their duties as TL and CR...job well done!

Coach Martin will stay briefly in Bermuda and then return home to Argentina for some well deserved family time.

Arrivderci from Garda....

An earlier start today as the race committee will try to finish race 9 yesterday for the blue, red and green fleets before they attempt to start today's scheduled races.

Race 9 was scheduled for noon with the blue ( Benn) fleet from yesterday...followed by red ( Mikey) then green( Ceci and Campbell) .

Lets hope for some good wind to finish this regatta on a high!

Sailwave results for OPTIMIST WORLDS CHAMPIONSHIP 2013 at Lake Garda, Italy 2013

After a long postponement they finally sent the boats out at around 2. The committee was only able to get off one race due to light shifty winds.

Another tough day for the team
Results below.....

http://www.fragliavelariva.it/sites/default/files/regatta/r1042-result-f2484.pdf

Chase is still top Bermudian at 87th overall with a 21st in today's race.
Next up is Ceci holding 100 th place with a 46 in today's racing.
Campbell is in 117 th posting a 13th place in today's race
Benn has climbed up the board today to 154 with a 26th finish
Mikey has also climbed up to a 159 posting a 37 today.

We are still waiting ( as are many other teams) for that promised strong wind of Riva.
We will see what the last 2 days of racing will bring us.

Tonight was the kids social... With the club hosting a " Nutella Party" ....which was just that.....we did have to stop for pizza take out on the way back to the hotel as the Nutella did not classify as dinner with the team .....any excuse for pizza!

Early to bed for a ( hopefully ) full day of racing tommorrow!

Top of Mount Baldo

Day off of racing today and team BER went canyoning!

The team was up at 8 am to spend the morning hiking, sliding down waterfalls ,absailing down rock faces and jumping into mountain water pools.

A quick lunch at ( Yet another) pizza cafe and then off to ride a cable car to the top of Mount Baldo in Malcesine . The stunning views with cooler temperatures made a wonderful end to the " rest day".

Early nights tonight and back to fleet racing tommorrow.

Lets pray for the strong steady breeze that Lake Garda is know for and some good results for our sailors,

Updates through the day tommorrow.

A mime we happened upon on our way to dinner!
Today the team decided that even though they did not make it through to Day 2 of team racing they would show some support. A paddle boat was rented and they spend most of the afternoon spectating the team racing. SIN was victorious against ITA in the final .

We decided to head into the old town for dinner and Campbell found us a great pizzaria on the square. Had a great dinner and the kids hung out in the square with a few other teams...then we headed back ( after a gelato stop!)

Early morning tommorrow . Its the spare day and the team is going canyoning!

After waiting through postponements for lack of wind and then mark issues team racing finally began
First up for Team BER was NOR .
The team lost this flight so were then paired with BUL which we won .
The wind died for the next pairing with Greece.
After having a great start a few mistakes at the top mark made the race tight with capsizing boats and upwind -with no wind - allowed Greece to win by one point so unfortunately Team BER will not advance into tommorrows racing.

The team did a great job though and will take tommorrow as a day to relax and spectate the finals of the team racing.

Pizza night in the old town.
Day 2 was up and down for our team.

Race 3 and 4 of the Opti Worlds was lighter than the team expected. The afternoon Ora did not come in as hoped with shifty winds that delayed starts of the second races of the day.

Our lone female sailor, Ceci, had another great day posting a 2nd and a 22nd to bring her up to 21st overall/ 2nd female.

Chase had a good day finishing up 56 th overall with a 7th and a 13th.

The youngest on our team also had a great day . Campbell posted an impressive 49 and 11th to finish up 135th overall

Benn did not have as great a day as he had hoped...his finishes were a 54 and a 48 to bring him down to 174th overall.

Mikey was able to increase his overall position today with a 35 and a 39 . He is now in 179th place overall.

It was a long day for the team so we decided instead of hotel food we would go out into the old town for pizza. After some great food we headed back to the hotel to get some rest for another long day tomorrow.

Race 5 and 6 scheduled for Friday.....lets hope for some good steady winds!

Racing finished up around 5 today . The team came back and hung out with some of Team USA and BAH on our hotel. An early dinner at the hotel ( not such a hit tonight...may have to do pizza tommorrow) and the standard gelato ..... They had some time to kill before Matins evening brief so Julie and the team took a walk along the waterside and discovered trampolines....( thanks BAH)... Everyone had a great time jumping then headed back to the hotel , hung out with a few teams in the lobby ( which the hotel was most pleased about) and headed into the debrief then an early night to rest up for a long day tommorrow.

Tired team tonight!

Fwd:

>
> Martins Summary of Day 1
>
> Winds approximately 12-18 with chop
> In both of today's races the right was always favored which seems to be a constant here in Garda when the Ora comes in .
>
>
> Benn and Mikey both sailed in the first fleet( yellow) of both races today.

> In Race # 1 they were both able to get good starts and set themselves up in a good position to get over to the right with the fleet. Mikey lost boats the last beat but was still able to finish with a good result for his first race. Benn had a good race and finished up with a 15.

In the second race Mikey tried to push too much at the start and ended up being over the line.
Benn unfortunately had a bad start and tried to get to the right of the course with the fleet but could not get the clear air he needed .

> Chase sailed in the second fleet ( blue)

> In the first race he started closer to the pin so was not able to get over to the right (after the start) and ended up rounding the top mark in the top 20.
> In the second race he started mid fleet but was never able to find clear air to stay with the fleet. He got discouraged on the last beat and did not try to fight back to the fleet.
>
> Ceci was in the third flight (red)
>
> She started from middle but crossed the fleet asap and with good speed got to the right and stayed in a good position with the fleet to finish
> In her second race she started closer to pin end and rounded the top mark in the top 5…her reach and downwind were a little slower but she still showed an impressive finish.
>
> Campbell was in the last fleet of the flights( green)

> He did not have great starts in both of his races although by having to start in the back it made him push harder and he was able to come back and get through a few boats.
> By starting in the back it made him push ..and he was able to pass many boats. Unfortunately with a bad start it is hard to get back over to the right side and stay with the fleet.
>
Tommorrow the first gun is at 1pm again. Let hope for some good wind and a fast Bermuda team!

Some Local Area Info

Riva del Garda is a town in the northern Italian province of Trento. It is located about half-way between Brescia and Verona, and between Venice and Milan.  It is also known simply as Riva. The estimated population is 15,151.
Riva del Garda is located at the north-western corner of Lake Garda, approximately 70 metres (230 ft) above sea level. The town is located at the southern edge of the Italian Alps, near the Dolomites. It is bordered by Monte Rocchetta to the west and Monte Brione, 376 metres (1,234 ft) above sea level, to the east. East of Riva del Garda is the village Torbole, bordered by Monte Baldo.
Lake Garda (Lago di Garda or Lago Benaco) is the largest lake in Italy. Glaciers formed this alpine region at the end of the last Ice Age. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the provinces of Verona (to the south-east), Brescia (south-west), and Trentino (north).

Bermuda bikers in Riva!
Oh hey Leonard....hanging out with NZL
Chase making a new friend ...

Campbell and Coach Martin

It was a busy day today for Team Bermuda.

Measurement followed by registration this morning...which the team breezed through with no issues ....followed by a little work on the boats to get ready for tommorrows racing.

The winds picked up and were quite gusty in the afternoon and Martin thought it best to let the kids rest rather than tire them out in the practice race.

They rented pedal bikes for an hour ..cruised around...then headed back to the hotel to get ready for the opening ceremony.

The opening ceremony began a little late ( Italian time must be very similar to Bermuda time) at around 5:45. Benn and Ceci carried our big flags while everyone else waved mini Bermuda flags The teams lined up by country and were marched through the old town of Riva into the main square where the countries were introduced and speeches were given by officials. The atmosphere was festive with people of the town hanging out of their windows , spectating and cheering the sailors on. The kids had a great time waving Bermuda flags and giving out mini flags to the spectators .

The ceremony finished just after 7 and we headed back to the hotel for dinner. After Martins nightly brief the kids went right to bed ( well...after a quick visit from some of the US team :0)....who are staying at a hotel a few doors down.)

Racing starts tommorrow with 2 scheduled races per day. First start scheduled from 1pm.

Monday, July 15, 2013

The team got out for approximately 3 hours today in about 10-14 knots .
They trained with ARG ( mainly working on speed testing) and Martin felt good with all of their speed in comparison with the Argentinians.
The wind seems to come in from the South, predominantly on the right, and gradually picks up at around 1:30/2:00 when the temperature warms and the clouds blow off.

Everyone seems happy and excited to start racing....

Tommorrow morning we have measurement and registration then the practice race in the afternoon.

Opening ceremony tommorrow night and then racing starts on Wednesday and continues thorough Friday.
Team racing Saturday and hopefully Sunday.
Rest day on Monday
Racing continues on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
Prize giving on Thursday night .

Another event happening next week on the last day of racing.....Benn's birthday! Hopefully we can celebrate lots of good results along with Benn's birthday :0)

Photos from Capizzano today.

A little stretching after a long afternoon on the water.

A good practice today with good wind....and no boat damage :0).....dinner in the old town and bed early again.

Tommorrow Coach Martin has given the team the morning off . The plan is to drive up the mountain to let them see the arial view of the course....then back down for afternoon practice.

A guide to the wind patterns of Lake Garda

Ora: the most famous Garda wind blows from the south and builds itself from many smaller winds that meet between Gargnano and Brenzone. It's quite regular and predicatble in spring, summer and autumn. Is's stronger and most reliable in summer because it of the strong sunrays reflected from the watersurface and the mountains around the northern part of the lake. The Ora starts when the Peler drops between 12 and 1.30 pm. and ends, in normal conditions, at sunset. Its wind force varies considerably.

Peler: It's the King of all Lake Garda winds, a "fine-weather" wind. It's constant and steady in June, July, August and September, and begins between midnight and 3 am.

Peler brings three big waves, the biggest of these three is the second that is ideal for windsurf acrobatics. Bigger waves are to be found a little more south near Torri del Benaco and even bigger near Toscolano. The Peler lasts about 12 hours, but if it builds up stronger than its usual 4/5 Beufort, then it can last until 2 or 3 pm. It brings strong waves and stirs up the deep cold water from the depth of the lake bringing the water temperature down, so delaying the Ora wind to develop. In the late afternoon the water turns flat and a strong current conveys the water back north past Brenzone, Malcesine & Navene. Later in the evening the north wind builds up again.
The team headed out around 11 this am for practice in 8-10 knots of breeze....which has steadily picked up to about 18-22 around 3pm with chop..... It's honking out there!
The typical Ora has come in... A sailors paradise!

They should be out until around 4 today....expecting a tired team tonite.
Good morning from Garda!

Saturday, July 13, 2013

A good practice today....the team headed out around noon.
Lunch on the water...and jumped into the second practice race.
Wind was good until the rain came later In the day ....then the wind died.
Tim and Julie drove up to a great vantage point to get an arial view of the course.
Dinner at the hotel tonight , another round of gelato ( there just happens to be a great gelato bar across the street from us) , debrief and then America's cup ( ITA VS NZL) .
Happy tired sailors are now turned in for the night.

Tommorrow repair work on Benn's boat ( he got rammed by another sailor) then practice...maybe see a little of Riva del Garda from the land if practice goes well.... Measurement and registration not until Tuesday am .
